With a degree in philosophy from California State University at Long Beach, Gary Curtis embarked on a successful career in business administration but pursued art as an avocation. Entering art shows when time allowed, he found his work was well received and eventually left his career to devote himself to his art.
Curtis finds watercolor the best medium for capturing “the translucence of light and shadow.” He sets up his still lifes with a single strong light source for heightened contrasts and exaggerates the reflections. “The resulting works,” observed The Artist’s Magazine, “have a lifelike clarity and the type of drama usually associated with some of Curtis’s primary painting influences - the Dutch Masters.
”His watercolor still lifes have won numerous awards and are represented in several private and corporate collections, including Coca-Cola, IBM and Hilton Hotels. His work also hangs at Hunter Museum in Chattanooga, Tennessee and Daytona Beach Museum of Arts & Sciences in Florida. He has been featured in American Artist Magazine and The Artist’s Magazine.
