“My oil paintings are soft and serene. They project the tranquility nature implants in me. My imagery draws the viewer into familiar places while also exposing them to my deep visceral affinity for nature. Soft edges and layering colors are my secrets to capturing its true essence. The result, a contemporary realism immersed in a tranquil serenity.”
A multitude of painters choose landscapes as their primary subject matter. However, few draw upon their tools of visual expression to infuse their landscapes with the emotion and character possessed by Susan Roux’s paintings. Roux utilizes color, composition and mark-making to render water, trees, flowers and fields while simultaneously endowing each with light and movement bringing the elements of nature to life. Whether it is the languid glow of a summer sunset, the playful shimmer on the midday sun or the wind captured on a sunlit shirt, Roux gives her paintings a feeling and ultimately lets us see her emotional connection to the work and its subject matter.
Her bond with nature developed as a child growing up in Berlin, New Hampshire amongst the White Mountains. After high school, she went on to study at RISD before returning to northern New England. Living and working in Maine, Roux began painting seriously in 1989. Since then, she has enjoyed tremendous success selling her paintings to buyers from all along the East Coast to California.
Roux is an active member of several art associations. She has been curator of several shows, is on an exhibits committee, teaches oil painting and exhibits her work regularly. She has been selected in juried exhibits along with solo and two person shows in several Maine galleries. Roux’s gallery representation ranges from Coastal Maine to Cape Cod. In addition, her work can be seen on the Internet at her .com website. Roux never hesitates to give back to the community, often donating her art and time in fund raising activities.
